At Longlands Holiday Park, we offer a haven for owners and their pets from the bangs, booms, and flashes of Bonfire Night. However for those eager to join in the celebrations, many venues within easy reach offer organised displays.
Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, has a history that dates back over 400 years. This event commemorates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot, a conspiracy to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London on 5th November 1605.
The Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. Led by Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes, the plotters secretly stored 36 barrels of gunpowder in a cellar beneath the House of Lords, aiming to destroy the building during the State Opening of Parliament, killing the King and many of his leading ministers.
The plot was foiled when an anonymous letter was sent to Lord Monteagle, warning him to avoid the House of Lords on the appointed day. The letter reached the authorities, and a search of the Parliament buildings was ordered. In the early hours of 5th November, Guy Fawkes was discovered guarding the gunpowder. He was arrested, and the other conspirators were pursued. Many were killed during their capture, and the survivors, including Fawkes, were executed in January 1606.
The modern name, “Guy Fawkes Night,” stems from the practice of burning effigies of Guy Fawkes, known as “Guys,” on these bonfires.
